Indian long jumper Anju Bobby George clinched the bronze medal at the World Athletics Championships 2003 in Paris.
Asian Games gold medallist and Commonwealth Games bronze medallist George clinched the third place in the women's long jump competition with her fifth attempt of 6.70 m. Gold and silver went to France’s Eunice Barber (6.99 m) and Tatyana Kotova (6.74m) of Russia.
The Kerala athlete started with an impressive 6.61m jump in the first attempt and continued with two fault attempt. Barber and Kotova used these two fault attempts by George and went ahead with 6.74m.
Anju Bobby George came back with 6.56m in the fourth and 6.70m in the fith attempt. She finished the sixth and last one with 6.62m.
This unexpected bronze medal for the Indian long jumper is an historic one: Anju Bobby George became the first Indian athlete ever to win a medal in a World Athletics Championships!!!
