The 2nd South Asian Football Federation Championships 1999:
Before the start of the SAFF Cup, favourites were defending champions and hosts India, and besides them Sri Lanka. But it was different then expected, as Sri Lanka didn't even make it to the semifinals, while India were not at all champions-like. Surprise packages the strength of Bangladesh, Nepal and Maldives. India reached the final with a better performance but it's best was reserved for the final, were they beat Bangladesh convincingly 2-0 but a problem remained throughout the championships, the number of missed chances. Except in the opening match, India scored two goals each in every match. India's star striker Baichung Bhutia was voted as "Most Valuable Player", and he scored some spectacular goals in the tournament. Later Bhutia was also voted as "Sanyo Asian Player of the Month" for the month of May by the Asian Football Confederation.
